A security center for artificial intelligence is being established in the United States to integrate it into defense and intelligence systems.

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is embarking on a crucial mission to further enhance artificial intelligence capabilities and integrate them into U.S. defense and intelligence systems. The agency is establishing an artificial intelligence security center.

We will strengthen ourselves against artificial intelligence-based threats from China and Russia.

General Paul Nakasone, the leader of the U.S. military, stated that the center would be included in the NSA’s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, where it will collaborate with the private sector and international partners to strengthen the U.S. defense industry against threats from leading adversaries such as China and Russia.

When asked whether the United States has determined whether Russia or China is attempting to influence the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, Nakasone responded, “We haven’t seen anything like that yet.” Nakasone noted that there would be a series of elections worldwide before the U.S. elections and stated that the United States would work with its partners and allies to deter such efforts.

Cybersecurity researchers have reported that China has increased its cyber operations against the United States and allied institutions in recent months, suggesting that these operations may also involve pre-positioning malicious software designed to disrupt military communication.

On Wednesday, the United States and Japan issued a warning stating that Chinese hackers have targeted government, industry, telecommunications, and other institutions supporting their militaries.

When asked about using artificial intelligence to automate the analysis of threat vectors and red flag warnings, Nakasone pointed out that U.S. intelligence and defense agencies are already using artificial intelligence. He stated:

“Artificial intelligence assists us, but our decisions are made by humans. That’s an important distinction. We get help from artificial intelligence. However, at the end of the day, decisions will be made by humans within the loop.”

Nakasone emphasized that the focus of the NSA would be on leveraging external intelligence for both AI security and the secure development and adoption of artificial intelligence within national security systems and the defense industry. He stated that the NSA would contribute to the development of best practices, principles, assessments, methodologies, and risk frameworks in this regard.
